Blueberry Bread Pudding

This sweet take on a classic dish is loaded with American charm. Serve with vanilla ice cream for extra decadence.

Ingredients

  • 1 Braum’s Pound Cake
  • 1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • 4 tablespoons Braum’s Unsalted Butter
  • 1 cup Braum’s Buttermilk
  • 4 large Braum’s Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • 1 lemon for zesting

Instructions

  1. Open one Braum’s Pound Cake and cut it into about two-inch sized cubes. Lay out on a plate to dry out overnight.
  2. The next day, place cubes into a mixing bowl and combine with blueberries.
  3. Place cake and blueberries into a buttered 9-x-13-inch baking dish. Melt butter and evenly pour over the cake and berries. Allow the butter to absorb into the cake.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine buttermilk, eggs, vanilla, allspice, and the zest of one lemon. Pour mixture over the cake and berries. Cover the dish and chill for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator.
  5. Bake the pudding mixture at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to an hour or until the pudding has a golden color and is set. Allow to rest 10 to 15 minutes before serving. Optional: Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Bacon Pasta Primavera

Use your garden veggies in this wonderfully creamy, bacon-filled pasta.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices Braum’s Bacon
  • ½ medium white, red, or yellow onion, chopped
  • 10 asparagus spears, chopped
  • ½ head of broccoli, chopped
  • 1 red or orange bell pepper, chopped
  • 5 tablespoons Braum’s Salted Butter
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 (16-ounce) package penne pasta
  • 1 ½ – 2 cups Braum’s Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • ½ – 2 cups Parmesan cheese
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare pasta according to package al dente instructions. Reserve one cup of pasta water for use later. Drain and set aside.
  2. Slice bacon into half-inch pieces and cook in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once pieces are browned and crispy, remove from skillet and place on a paper towel-covered plate or platter. Set aside. Reserve about one tablespoon of bacon grease for sautéing vegetables.
  3. In the same skillet, melt two tablespoons of butter on medium-high heat and add onion. Cook until slightly softened and add garlic. Cook for another minute. Add asparagus and broccoli and cook for one to two minutes. Vegetables should retain their crispness. Remove the vegetables from the skillet and set aside on a plate or platter. Add bell pepper and cook for another minute and then transfer to the plate with the other vegetables.

Once the vegetables are removed from the skillet, reduce heat, melt the remaining butter and add heavy cream (up to two cups, depending on how much sauce you want). Bring to a slight simmer and use a wooden spoon or spatula to scrape remaining drippings from the skillet into the sauces. Add up to one cup of shredded parmesan to make it creamier. Add vegetables, pasta, and pasta water back in and gently combine ingredients. Heat thoroughly. Add lemon zest, pepper, and top with parmesan cheese. Serve immediately.

Car snacks are packed the night before a road trip.

While we always recommend making Braum’s a stop on your road trip, we’re not located in every state. Since your family might be driving miles away from a Braum’s store, we have a few kid-friendly recipes you can make to take with you on your journey!

These snacks are a breeze to whip together and will please even the pickiest eaters in your family. Better yet? You can stop by and get all your snack supplies at Braum’s Fresh Market.

Before Your Trip – Snack Planning

A little planning goes a long way on a road trip and the same goes for snacks. In the days leading up to your trip, locate a large snack bag or cooler that can keep food cool and dry (We offer one in our Fresh Market). Select a bag that has side pockets, plenty of storage, and will fit comfortably on a seat or the floor of your car.

To keep organized, use plastic food storage containers and label them for each child (or parent) they’re intended for. Snacks that are for sharing can go in larger containers or can be placed in Ziploc bags for portioning.

Pack the snack bag in a convenient spot in your car. You don’t want to have unpack your trunk every time your kids get hungry. Be sure to keep wet wipes, paper towels, and hand sanitizer in the bag for meal time.

Tortilla pinwheel sandwiches sit in containers.

Tortilla Sandwich Wheels

When kids get hungry, the “Are we there yet?!” alarm starts sounding. Satisfy their grumbling tummies with protein-packed tortilla sandwich pinwheels. These customizable and fun alternatives to sandwiches are easy to pack and eat in the car. Try a sweet peanut butter and jelly version or a savory ham and cheese!

Ingredients

Ham and Cheese Wheels

  • 1 ten-inch flour tortilla
  • 2 to 3 Colby Jack cheese slices
  • 3 deli ham slices
  • Mustard (optional)
  • Mayonnaise (optional)

Directions

  1. Lay one tortilla down on a plate or cutting board. Spread a thin layer of mustard or mayo on the tortilla, if desired.
  2. Place two to three slices of cheese on tortilla. Place ham slices on top of cheese.
  3. Roll the tortilla tightly from one end to the other.
  4. With a sharp knife, slice the rolled tortilla into one-and-half-inch pinwheel slices.
  5. Place pinwheels into a plastic container and pack into cooler or snack bag with ice packs.

  • 4 tablespoons chunky or smooth peanut butter
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey

Farm Fresh for 50 Years

In the Midwest, a bright pink and blue neon ice cream cone usually only means one thing, a Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Store is on the horizon.

The iconic staple known for its farm fresh milk, hand-dipped ice cream, grilled burgers, fries and shakes, is celebrating its 50th anniversary just in time for National Ice Cream month.

The family-owned and operated business first opened its doors in Oklahoma City in 1968.

“This is a momentous milestone that we could not have reached without our wonderful customers,” said Drew Braum, President and CEO. “We have enjoyed over five decades of growing with the communities that we are in, and we look forward to serving them for many decades to come.”

Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy will celebrate their 50th anniversary by offering some extra sweet savings for National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 15th. Every location will offer the following specials from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on National Ice Cream Day:

  • $0.50 Small Frozen Yogurt Cones
  • $0.50 Single Dip Ice Cream Cones
  • $1.00 Single Dip Ice Cream Sundaes

Although the Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Store name has only been around for 50 years, the groundwork began in 1933. It was that year that Henry H. Braum, Bill Braum’s father, bought a small butter processing plant located in their hometown of Emporia, Kansas. Later, milk processing was added.

Throughout his childhood, Bill Braum helped his father with the family business learning every aspect of the operation.

BRAUM’S HISTORY THROUGH THE DECADES:

  • 1933: Henry H. Braum (Bill Braum’s father) bought a small butter processing plant located in their hometown of Emporia, Kansas. Later, milk processing was added.
  • 1940: Henry Braum expanded the business to include ice cream processing.

Peter Pan Ice Cream Store in Kansas.

  • 1952: Henry Braum sold the wholesale part of the business and began specializing in milk and ice cream. He developed a chain of retail ice cream stores in Kansas called “Peter Pan”, named after a local park in Emporia.
  • 1961: After graduating with a business degree and taking a more active role in the company, Bill bought the company from his father and also purchased his first dairy farm in Emporia.
  • 1967: After growing the Peter Pan chain to 61 stores and increasing the business ten-fold, Bill sold the “Peter Pan” retail stores to a large wholesaler. The sale did not include the Braum dairy herd and processing plant. Stated as a condition of sale, the Braum’s would not be allowed to sell ice cream in Kansas for ten years.
  • 1968: Bill and his wife, Mary, opened their first Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Store in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Twenty-three more stores opened throughout the State of Oklahoma that year. For three years, because the Braum dairy herd and processing plant were still located in Emporia, Kansas, all

One of the first Braum’s stores built in Oklahoma City.

ice cream, dairy products, and other supplies had to be transported daily from Emporia, Kansas, to Oklahoma.

  • 1971: A new 60,000 square foot processing plant was built in Oklahoma City.
  • 1975: The Braum’s dairy herd, which was the largest dairy herd in Kansas at the time, moved to Oklahoma. This “modern day cattle drive” consisted of over 900 cows traveling down the highway in a convoy of semi trailer trucks to their new home at the Braum Farm in Tuttle.
  • 1978: The original Braum’s bakery was built in Oklahoma City next to the Processing Plant. This facility produced the fresh bakery items available in Braum’s stores including cookies, cones, buns, breads and much more.
  • 1983: Bill and Mary Braum bought several farms in southeastern Oklahoma including farms in Stonewall, Asher, Wanette and Byars, Oklahoma. Each farm played its own unique role in the Braum operation from growing alfalfa hay and corn to feed the dairy herd, to raising calves.
  • 1987: The need for a larger processing plant became evident. Braum’s construction crews built a 260,000 square foot, state-of-the-art-processing plant on the Braum Farm in Tuttle. The original processing plant became the site for Braum’s Corporate Offices.
  • 1988: Bill Braum purchased the farm that lies on the border of Follett, Texas and Shattuck, Oklahoma. At the time, this farm was used primarily for growing alfalfa hay to feed the dairy herd. Over the years this farm has grown to 24,000 acres (38 square miles).
  • 1993: Braum’s construction crews built what is now touted as one of the largest milking operations of its kind in the world on the Tuttle Farm consisting of a milk barn and 17 free stall barns (covering 35 acres) that house Braum’s private dairy herd.

Tuttle, OK Dairy Farm-The free stalls were installed to house the Braum dairy herd.

  • 2002: Braum’s construction crews built a milking complex on the Follett Farm. Although smaller than the milking operation in Tuttle, the private dairy herd provides several truckloads of thousands of pounds of fresh raw milk each day. This milk is transported to the Braum’s Processing Plant in Tuttle. Calves that are born on the Shattuck Farm are raised here and will eventually join the milking herd. All of the bull calves from both Tuttle and Shattuck are raised here as well.
  • 2008: 3000 calf hutches and pens were installed so the replacement heifers could be raised on the Tuttle Farm. Eventually they will become part of the milking herd.
  • 2010: Braum’s built a new 240,000 square foot Bakery and Warehouse Distribution Facility adjacent to the Processing Plant on the Tuttle Farm.

Today, Braum’s owns and operates around 280 stores located throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas. All Braum’s stores are within about a 300-mile radius of the Braum Farm and Processing Plant in Tuttle. Our delivery trucks are on the road seven days a week delivering fresh product to each store, every other day.

One of the newest Braum’s locations built in Oklahoma City off of SW 134th.

Bill and Mary’s four children, Becky, Elaine, Murray and Drew have worked over the years in various capacities assuming more and more responsibilities.  Today, Drew is President and CEO.  He manages the company, including the processing plant, bakery, trucks and the stores.  Drew’s sister Elaine assists him.  Drew’s eldest son, Drew II, came to work for the company after serving in the Marines and doing a tour in Afghanistan. He currently runs the Tuttle Plant. Drew’s youngest son, Colton Braum, just started his first job with the company at 15-years-old. He serves ice cream at his neighborhood Braum’s just like his sister, Emma, and brother did when they were younger. A family business founded on strong work ethic.

Bill and Mary are now semi-retired, and live on the Tuttle Farm.

Throughout the years, Bill Braum has been known as a pioneer in “vertical integration”. From the ground up, Braum’s consistently controls every aspect of the operation including farming, manufacturing, and retailing.

The Anatomy of a Perfect Ice Cream Sundae

$
0
0

Going out with family and friends for ice cream is an American tradition. For more than a century, one of the sweetest treats you can enjoy has been an ice cream sundae.

It’s believed ice cream sundaes got their start in American drug stores and soda fountains, although there’s not a definitive answer as to where they originated. Several small towns claim to be the home of the first sundae, so the title is up for debate. President Theodore Roosevelt banned ice cream sodas on Sundays, so fountain owners got around the law by serving ice cream with syrup but without soda. Customers started to request the “Sunday” and it became a part of the menu. It’s been suggested that “sundae” became the spelling to not offend the Sabbath and because it was a treat available every day of the week.

While we may not know where the ice cream sundae originated, we do know for certain what makes up a perfect ice cream sundae.

The Braum’s Way

At Braum’s, the perfect sundae starts with a cake or brownie in the bottom of the bowl. It’s especially yummy if the cake, like our Molten Lava Cake, is warm.

On top of the cake or brownie, we add two scoops of our Premium Ice Cream. Did you know that you can swap out the ice cream in your sundae for any of our Old Fashioned Premium Ice Cream flavors? So if our Molten Lava Sundae is calling your name but you just have to have Premium Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, you can order a Molten Lava Sundae and simply substitute the ice cream! Also, the two scoops don’t have to be the same flavor. Try a new flavor like Premium Circus Cookie and pair it with your old favorite, Rocky Road.

After the ice cream, we add a sweet topping like hot fudge, caramel, marshmallow topping, or strawberry sauce.

To add a little crunch and texture to your sundae, we add nuts on the sweet topping.

Of course, no ice cream sundae is complete without whipped cream and a cherry on top.

We have four new sundaes that feature our latest ice cream flavor additions: Circus Animal Cookie Sundae, Cool Mint Cookie, Sea Salt Caramel Cashew Sundae, and Molten Lava Cake.

Because every sundae is made to order, you can request to leave off any of the toppings you may not enjoy. A perfect sundae is the one that’s perfect for you. And all of Braum’s sundaes are available with a single scoop of ice cream if you’d like a smaller sweet treat.

Looking for something less creamy and more tart? If refreshing fruity drinks are the summer treat you crave, learn how Braum’s crafts the perfect limeade.

Your Braum’s Stories – My First Job at Braum’s!

We asked our fans to share first job memories at Braum’s… and they delivered!

Many had fond memories from their crew member years (and some are still working with us)! Reading your stories warmed our hearts–and made us hungry for ice cream. Some of you perfected the preparation of a hot fudge sundae, others had fun interacting with customers over the counter.

One common theme is the friendships formed between team members (and even a few future marriages)! Many credited managers for instilling a strong work ethic and loved their Braum’s experience.

Commemorate good times and hard work with a scoop of your favorite ice cream flavor or enjoy a chicken strip meal for old time’s sake. Thanks for the dedication to our customers!

Here are a few of our favorite first job stories.

“My first job experience, at the Joplin, MO Braum’s, was back in 2014 when I was first hired on… this was my very first job and when I reported in for my first day, I was beyond scared! After orientation I got a lot of hands on experience and at first I was called a turtle because of how slow I moved, and then something clicked and I became a superstar on the cone line and register four… After about a year and a half, I was promoted to night shift supervisor.

Since then, I started doing a lot of the training for the new kids, from how to make single dip cones all the way to running the grill. I have been able to watch them grow as people and not just as my employees! During all this time, I became friends with my co-workers and customers. Some of the customers come in just to have me serve them. I have LOVED every moment that I have worked for Braum’s and I am glad that I am still with them and my future goal with Braum’s is to become a trainer! I will always recommend to friends and relatives to have their kids apply for Braum’s as their first job the same way I did three years ago! Thank you for all the opportunities that you all have given me!”

Submitted by Beau L.

My first job was at Braum’s in Purcell, OK. I was seventeen and a senior in high school. I can still remember how nervous I was in the interview. For the first few months, they had me cleaning in the lobby. After a while, I moved to working the back drive-thru. Within a year, I could work anywhere in the store, but the back drive-thru will always be my favorite spot. I got to know a lot of the regular customers; I really enjoyed getting to know them, and their orders!

My general manager was always so understanding and worked around my school schedule. I worked there all the way through college and even got a scholarship from Braum’s to help with a part of my tuition. Now as a teacher, I credit my manager with instilling such a good work ethic in me. I could probably call her even now for a job!”

Submitted by Torri R.

“I was only looking for a part time job when I was 16 and still in high school. I just wanted a little bit of spending money and it eventually turned into a career. I went full-time after I finished high school.

By the time I turned 21, I became a shift manager and I have been a shift manager for three years. I’ve been at Braum’s for seven years and I love it. You get paid decently and get to meet really cool customers that turn into our regular customers. I’m always happy to see their faces when they come in that door.”

Submitted by Jessica S.

“I met my husband by working at Braum’s! I started working there the summer before my senior year in high school and he had been working there for a year or so. Five years later we got married! 12 years and three kids later and we still love Braum’s!

Submitted by Barbara K

“I got my first job at Braum’s in 2008 when I was just 14. It was supposed to be just a summer job, but little did I know that a summer job would turn into a five-year job! It taught me a lot about the working world and I’m forever grateful for the experience.

I miss my regular customers a lot. There was a man that came in every Sunday just so I could make him a Butterfinger mix. My other favorites to make were cherry limeades and ice cream sodas. I still make sodas at home to this day!”

Submitted by Lauren A.

“My first job was at Braum’s, it started over two years ago on May 15, 2015, the day after I turned 16. It was in Chickasha, Oklahoma. It was the BEST first job ever. All my managers were amazing…

My best memory of working at Braum’s was probably when we got a 100% on one of the BOGO Tuesdays when another store challenged us. We were all so helpful of each other and I had a blast.”

Caramel Delight Cake

This cake fits the ultimate dessert bill–it’s warm, gooey, and topped with chocolate toffee.

Ingredients

  • 1 (15.25 ounce) package German chocolate cake mix with pudding included
  • 1 ¼ cups water
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • Homemade whipped cream (We used the recipe included below)
  • 1 (16 ounce) jar Braum’s Caramel Ice Cream Topping
  • 2 large chocolate toffee candy bars, crushed

Instructions

  • Mix and bake German chocolate cake mix according to box instructions.
  • Once the cake has baked, remove from oven and poke holes with the end of a spatula or other utensil.
  • Pour the jar of caramel topping evenly over the top of the cake. Reserve some of the caramel for topping later. Let the cake cool.
  • Once cooled, cover the cake with whipped cream topping. Sprinkle with crushed chocolate toffee candy and place in refrigerator until ready to serve.
  • If desired, drizzle with remaining caramel topping that’s been warmed (use caution if microwaving as jar may become extremely hot).
  • Serve cake with a scoop of your favorite Braum’s Ice Cream or a glass of Braum’s milk.

Homemade Whipped Cream

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of Braum’s Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1/4 cup of confectioner’s sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla

Instructions

  • Chill your bowl and whisk (or mixer) in the freezer for about 15 to20 minutes.
  • Once they are very cold to touch, remove them from the freezer. Immediately pour the whipping cream into the bowl and beat on high until stiff peaks are just about to form, about three minutes.
  • Beat in vanilla, egg nog, and sugar until peaks form. Do not overbeat as this will cause the cream to become lumpy. It is best to use the cream within one day.

Walnut and Pear Stuffing

Is there anything more comforting than a side of crispy, hot stuffing? The walnuts in this dish provide a wonderful crunch!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground pork stuffing
  • 4 celery ribs, sliced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup Braum’s Butter
  • 2 large green pears, peeled and chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (16 ounce) day-old Braum’s sourdough bread loaf, cubed
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped and toasted
  • 1 Tablespoon rubbed sage
  • 2 teaspoons coarsely ground pepper
  • 1  cups chicken or turkey broth

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, brown the sausage, stirring until crumbly. Once cooked, drain and set aside.
  • After cleaning the skillet, sauté celery and onion in butter over medium-high heat until crisp-tender. Add chopped pears and garlic; sauté until pear is tender. Remove mixture from heat.
  • Place bread cubes in a large bowl. Stir in sausage, celery mixture, walnuts, sage, and pepper. Pour broth over stuffing while stirring the mixture gently.
  • Place stuffing in a 9×13 inch lightly-greased or buttered casserole dish. Bake uncovered at 325 degrees for approximately one hour.

Creamy Egg Nog Cupcakes

These rich, egg nog-infused cupcakes are an absolute dream, but be careful! It’s hard not to go back for seconds!

Ingredients

Cupcakes

  • 1 (16 ounce) package pound cake mix
  • 1 ¼ cups Braum’s Egg Nog
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup Braum’s butter, softened
  • 3 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup Braum’s Egg Nog
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Combine pound cake mix, egg nog, eggs, nutmeg, and vanilla extract with a mixer at low speed. Once well-combined, increase the mixer’s speed to medium and beat for two minutes.
  • Place baking cups into muffin tins and spoon batter into cups.
  • Bake for 18 to 20 minutes. To test if it is done, insert a tooth pick in the center of a cupcake. If it comes out clean, the cupcakes are done. Transfer to wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
  • To make the frosting, beat the butter and cream cheese with a mixer until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and egg nog, alternating between the two. Begin and end with adding sugar. Beat at low speed.
  • Add nutmeg and vanilla extract and beat until smooth. Spread over completely cooled cupcakes with a piping bag or with a frosting knife. Decorate with a sprinkle of nutmeg or colored sugar.

What is Butter Brickle Ice Cream? Everything You Want to Know About the Classic Flavor

$

0

You know the standard ice cream flavors. There are the basics like chocolate and vanilla and elevated favorites like Rocky Road. While all flavors are deliciously unique, there’s one ice cream parlor fixture we love for its sweet nostalgia—Butter Brickle.

Butter Brickle is a true golden oldie. Younger generations may not be familiar with the classic flavor, but that doesn’t mean they have to miss out. We’re breaking down everything you want to know about this retro favorite.

The History of Butter Brickle

Before we had the ice cream, we had Butter Brickle candy. The Fenn Bros. Ice Cream and Candy Company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota was a manufacturer that doled out sweet treats as early as 1918. The brand is recognized for the invention of Butter Brickle candy and ice cream flavoring.

Though the Fenn Bros. are credited with inventing Butter Brickle, it originated in Omaha, Nebraska. Omaha’s Blackstone Hotel is thought to be where the ice cream was debuted to the public in the 1920s.

The Fenn Bros. continued manufacturing Butter Brickle candy and flavoring until the 1970s, which is when the company liquidated. The Butter Brickle formula was sold to the company Leaf, Inc., which manufactured Heath Bars. In 1996, Hershey acquired the formula and trademark.

What Does Butter Brickle Taste Like?

Traditional Butter Brickle is made of small, crunchy pieces of golden-browned toffee. It’s buttery and sweet tasting. If you’re a fan of Heath bars, which are made of toffee covered in a silky chocolate layer, you may love Butter Brickle too!

Butter Brickle tastes incredible in more than just ice cream. Just scan online recipes to see cakes, frosting, pies, cookies, and treat bars inspired by the flavor.

Where Can I Buy Butter Brickle Ice Cream?

Are you a Butter Brickle fanatic craving nostalgia or even a total newbie to the flavor? You’re in luck. Braum’s churns out its version of the beautiful flavor on a regular basis. Braum’s Premium Butter Brickle Ice Cream features delightfully buttery toffee pieces and smooth vanilla flavoring.

Be sure to look for it in the Braum’s Fresh Market!

Braum’s Take on Butter Brickle

If you grab a pint of Braum’s Butter Brickle, take along a few extra fixings to elevate the classic. We suggest putting a scoop or two in a bowl. Drizzle it with warm fudge topping and sprinkle with crushed toffee or Heath bars. Finish with a generous dollop of whipped cream and top with a cherry!

Benefits of Braum’s Hormone-Free Greek Yogurt

$
0
0

Are you going Greek? Greek yogurt, that is.

This healthier alternative to traditional yogurt is deliciously tart and tangy. With less sugar and more protein than regular yogurt, it’s a great tasting snack or meal option that’s good for you too!

Braum’s introduces its take on Greek yogurt–available at the Fresh Market and as a fry alternative on Braum’s meal combos.

What is Greek Yogurt?

What makes yogurt Greek? It’s all in the process. Essentially, Greek yogurt is strained yogurt. Regular yogurt and Greek yogurt start out the same–milk is heated to an ideal temperature for fermentation. Bacterial cultures are then added to the milk and the mixture ferments.

During fermentation, bacteria grows and produces lactic acids. This causes the milk to gel, making yogurt. If making Greek yogurt, this mixture is strained to remove liquid whey and lactose. This creates the thick texture.

Beyond texture, Greek yogurt differs from regular yogurt in protein, fat, and carbs. Greek yogurt has nearly twice the amount of protein found in regular yogurt and about half the amount of carbs. Full-fat versions of Greek yogurt are higher in saturated fats compared to regular yogurt.

Health Benefits of Greek Yogurt

As we mentioned, Greek yogurt packs a ton of protein, roughly 12 to 15 grams per recommended serving. This means it will leave you feeling fuller longer than an empty carb-heavy snack. That wallop of protein can help support the strengthening of bones and muscle. All that protein makes it a great pre- and post-workout snack.

Not to be outshined by impressive protein, the probiotics naturally found in Greek yogurt can help support your immune system and aid digestion. The probiotics are the “good bacteria” needed by your body’s digestive system to function properly.

Calcium is another nutrient sufficiently found in Greek yogurt. Nearly 20 percent of your daily recommended value of calcium is in one serving of Greek yogurt. Calcium is needed to help build muscles and support organ function. Calcium is especially important for growing youngsters–since Greek yogurt is easy to sneak into other foods, like fruit smoothies, it’s easy to make sure kids get the calcium they need.

Vitamin B-12 and potassium are also found in Greek yogurt. Potassium can help lower blood pressure and even prevent cramps. B-12 supports brain and DNA functions and is typically found in animal products like meat and fish, but vegetarians can use Greek yogurt as a meatless B-12 source. Over 20 percent of the recommended daily value of B-12 is found in one serving of Greek yogurt.

Greek yogurt is also more acidic than regular yogurt, meaning its nutrients are easier for your body to absorb. Because of its texture and tart flavor, Greek yogurt is a healthy ingredient swap for sour cream and mayonnaise. A healthy swap can help incorporate more vital nutrients into your diet. Try it over a baked sweet potato or top your favorite chili recipe with a spoonful! Blend it into your morning smoothies or have a bowl of Greek yogurt with fresh fruit, nuts, and seeds for a healthy breakfast.

Braum's Greek Yogurt Containers Stacked on a shelf.Braum’s High-Quality, Hormone-Free Dairy

Customize Your Braum’s Combo with Greek Yogurt

Warm weather is officially here! Long days spent in the sun swimming and hanging with friends and family can work up a big appetite. Whether you’re headed to a neighborhood block party, hosting a summer’s eve dinner party, or kicking back barbecuing, the Braum’s 2017 Spring and Summer Recipe Brochure has something in store for you.
