Braum’s Book Buddy — Promoting Literacy Through Sweet Rewards

Reading proficiency by third grade is the strongest indicator of high school graduation, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Reading opens worlds through imagination and provides access to endless information. Although reading is vital to a child’s development, it can be difficult for parents and teachers to encourage reading in young students. When you provide an incentive for kids to read, you increase the likelihood that they’ll learn to love and value reading.

Teachers at Fillmore Elementary School in Oklahoma City partner with Braum’s Book Buddy program to offer sweet rewards to young readers.

Book Buddy, a reading incentive program, supports community schools by rewarding students with Braum’s treats in exchange for reading.  The incentives, though small, can make a big difference to young students who need encouragement as they practice their reading skills.  This year, over 400,000 students from Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas are enrolled in the program.

“At the beginning of the year, I have students who will come into my room and say they don’t want to read. They’ll try to get through the required reading, but don’t want to do anything extra,” said Holly Wilson, a second grade teacher at Fillmore Elementary.

Participating in Book Buddy helps her students reach reading goals by incorporating an important element into learning – fun, and of course, ice cream!

Book Buddy in the Classroom

Incentive is powerful with young students. Fillmore first grade teacher Jere Templeton uses the program to refocus her class on reading with effort.

“My class can get a little fidgety and the coupons bring them back in,” she said. “It gives them something to look forward to.”

Students are more eager to grab books outside of the classroom to earn reading points and keep their eyes on their goals. The extra reading practice is often vital to their success.

“It makes a dramatic difference,” Templeton said.

She even goes a step further by having her students write and draw about the book they’ve read so they can interact and comprehend the stories they read.  She expects that all this practice will pay off in the end.

“I really believe that the extra reading they are doing will be reflected in this year’s standardized reading exam scores,” she said.

While students get excited about free ice cream, the program has truly proven to be much more.

Learning to Love Reading

The program has lead students to develop a love for reading, which in turn has improved their reading levels. Wilson can recall a former student who participated in the program and who continues to benefit from the reading habits he developed while he was in her classroom. She said that he initially started reading just for the ice cream prize, but in time he developed a deep love for reading.

“He started reading more often and graduated to larger books, and then he was reaching for chapter books before I knew it,” she said.

Although a few years have passed, he still loves reading to this day.

“His mom told me he’s started reading Harry Potter,” Wilson said.

Braum's Book Buddy participant

Current students at Fillmore are also benefitting from the regular reading. Adventures have been shared with Pete the Cat; stops have been made at the Magic Treehouse. Wilson’s class is vocal about their favorite series.

“Green Eggs and Ham is my favorite book,” second grader Adrian Burrola said.

More reading means more exposure to different topics. Wilson includes books in her classroom about baseball heroes, African American history, and holidays.

“Once the students show an interest in a topic or time period, I really see them gravitate towards those kinds of books,” she said. “Passion and interest grow from independent study.”

The students’ excitement stands as a true testament to her statement. Their exclamations on a variety of subjects can be heard walking down the hall any given day of the week. “We read about the Titanic in class,” said Angel Rose Alvarez, one of Wilson’s students.

“I have a lot of Christmas books at home,” said 2nd grader April Faire.

Participation in Book Buddy continues to grow steadily each year, with participating schools in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Arkansas.

“I wish more schools did this program because it’s one of the best programs to encourage and engage kids in reading,” Wilson said. “They want the ice cream. It is a sweet and tangible thing that they can strive to obtain. By them reading and having to take responsibility for what they have to do they are increasing their word and learning knowledge.”

Tuttle, OK:  This year the City of Tuttle and Braum’s Ice Cream & Dairy are proud to be celebrating the 26th Annual Ice Cream Festival taking place in downtown Tuttle (right off Main Street), Saturday, June 17th, 2017 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m..

The Braum’s dairy farm is located in Tuttle, it was their delicious ice cream that inspired the City of Tuttle to hold a festival to pay homage to the best ice cream that is made in the very own community.

“This event is a great partnership between the City of Tuttle and Braum’s that began over two decades ago.  It continues to grow each year and gives us a chance to celebrate this wonderful community that is home to our farm, plant, bakery and dairy,” said Drew Braum, President and CEO.

This year the festival is slated to be one of the best years to date and large crowds are expected to turn out for all the fun.

The festival kicks off at 9 a.m. with a huge kid’s zone provided by Bounce The Town.

Live entertainment all day from local favorites.

More festival treats include the much-loved parade which will start at noon on Main Street.  To add to the fun, the Braum’s Family Farm Tour Cow Bus will be part of the parade, mooing and all.  Many other businesses and organizations will take part in the parade.

Other attractions include a classic car show (held at 1st Baptist church), a little league baseball tournament (held at Schrock Park), an Ice Cream Princess pageant (held at Tuttle Elementary), an ice cream eating contest at 2:00 (held at the entertainment stage) and a turtle race at 3:00 (held at the entertainment stage..bring your own turtle!)

This year the City has added many more vendor booths and more food trucks as well as adding an additional ice cream dipping booth to satisfy hungry festival goers.

The Anatomy of a Perfect Ice Cream Sundae

Going out with family and friends for ice cream is an American tradition. For more than a century, one of the sweetest treats you can enjoy has been an ice cream sundae.

It’s believed ice cream sundaes got their start in American drug stores and soda fountains, although there’s not a definitive answer as to where they originated. Several small towns claim to be the home of the first sundae, so the title is up for debate. President Theodore Roosevelt banned ice cream sodas on Sundays, so fountain owners got around the law by serving ice cream with syrup but without soda. Customers started to request the “Sunday” and it became a part of the menu. It’s been suggested that “sundae” became the spelling to not offend the Sabbath and because it was a treat available every day of the week.

While we may not know where the ice cream sundae originated, we do know for certain what makes up a perfect ice cream sundae.

The anatomy of a perfect ice cream sundae

The Braum’s Way

At Braum’s, the perfect sundae starts with a cake or brownie in the bottom of the bowl. It’s especially yummy if the cake, like our Molten Lava Cake, is warm.

On top of the cake or brownie, we add two scoops of our Premium Ice Cream. Did you know that you can swap out the ice cream in your sundae for any of our Old Fashioned Premium Ice Cream flavors? So if our Molten Lava Sundae is calling your name but you just have to have Premium Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, you can order a Molten Lava Sundae and simply substitute the ice cream! Also, the two scoops don’t have to be the same flavor. Try a new flavor like Premium Circus Cookie and pair it with your old favorite, Rocky Road.

After the ice cream, we add a sweet topping like hot fudge, caramel, marshmallow topping, or strawberry sauce.

To add a little crunch and texture to your sundae, we add nuts on the sweet topping.

Of course, no ice cream sundae is complete without whipped cream and a cherry on top.

We have four new sundaes that feature our latest ice cream flavor additions: Circus Animal Cookie Sundae, Cool Mint Cookie, Sea Salt Caramel Cashew Sundae, and Molten Lava Cake.

Because every sundae is made to order, you can request to leave off any of the toppings you may not enjoy. A perfect sundae is the one that’s perfect for you. And all of Braum’s sundaes are available with a single scoop of ice cream if you’d like a smaller sweet treat.

Looking for something less creamy and more tart? If refreshing fruity drinks are the summer treat you crave, learn how Braum’s crafts the perfect limeade.

Of course, we’re inclined to believe that no party is complete without a few scoops of your favorite flavor. But for a Thunder-themed party, keep it festive by serving our classic Orange Sherbet and our No. 1 best-selling flavor: Birthday Cake. Of course – since it’s playoff season for the OKC Thunder – our Oklahoma stores have temporarily renamed Birthday Cake to “Thunder Dip”. If you don’t like these flavors paired together, serve them separately and let your guests make their own creations.

The Toppings

No ice cream bar is complete without a host of toppings. Create two separate lines, one with fruity, fresh toppings for the Orange Sherbet and one with the classic ice cream bar toppings for the Birthday Cake flavor.

Your Braum’s Stories – My First Job at Braum’s!

A man serves soda out of a fountain.

We asked our fans to share first job memories at Braum’s… and they delivered!

Many had fond memories from their crew member years (and some are still working with us)! Reading your stories warmed our hearts–and made us hungry for ice cream. Some of you perfected the preparation of a hot fudge sundae, others had fun interacting with customers over the counter.

One common theme is the friendships formed between team members (and even a few future marriages)! Many credited managers for instilling a strong work ethic and loved their Braum’s experience.

Commemorate good times and hard work with a scoop of your favorite ice cream flavor or enjoy a chicken strip meal for old time’s sake. Thanks for the dedication to our customers!

Here are a few of our favorite first job stories.

“My first job experience, at the Joplin, MO Braum’s, was back in 2014 when I was first hired on… this was my very first job and when I reported in for my first day, I was beyond scared! After orientation I got a lot of hands on experience and at first I was called a turtle because of how slow I moved, and then something clicked and I became a superstar on the cone line and register four… After about a year and a half, I was promoted to night shift supervisor.

Since then, I started doing a lot of the training for the new kids, from how to make single dip cones all the way to running the grill. I have been able to watch them grow as people and not just as my employees! During all this time, I became friends with my co-workers and customers. Some of the customers come in just to have me serve them. I have LOVED every moment that I have worked for Braum’s and I am glad that I am still with them and my future goal with Braum’s is to become a trainer! I will always recommend to friends and relatives to have their kids apply for Braum’s as their first job the same way I did three years ago! Thank you for all the opportunities that you all have given me!”

I have love every moment that I have worked for Braum's

My first job was at Braum’s in Purcell, OK. I was seventeen and a senior in high school. I can still remember how nervous I was in the interview. For the first few months, they had me cleaning in the lobby. After a while, I moved to working the back drive-thru. Within a year, I could work anywhere in the store, but the back drive-thru will always be my favorite spot. I got to know a lot of the regular customers; I really enjoyed getting to know them, and their orders!

My general manager was always so understanding and worked around my school schedule. I worked there all the way through college and even got a scholarship from Braum’s to help with a part of my tuition. Now as a teacher, I credit my manager with instilling such a good work ethic in me. I could probably call her even now for a job!”

Submitted by Torri R.

“I was only looking for a part time job when I was 16 and still in high school. I just wanted a little bit of spending money and it eventually turned into a career. I went full-time after I finished high school.

By the time I turned 21, I became a shift manager and I have been a shift manager for three years. I’ve been at Braum’s for seven years and I love it. You get paid decently and get to meet really cool customers that turn into our regular customers. I’m always happy to see their faces when they come in that door.”

Submitted by Jessica S.

“I met my husband by working at Braum’s! I started working there the summer before my senior year in high school and he had been working there for a year or so. Five years later we got married! 12 years and three kids later and we still love Braum’s!

“I got my first job at Braum’s in 2008 when I was just 14. It was supposed to be just a summer job, but little did I know that a summer job would turn into a five-year job! It taught me a lot about the working world and I’m forever grateful for the experience.

I miss my regular customers a lot. There was a man that came in every Sunday just so I could make him a Butterfinger mix. My other favorites to make were cherry limeades and ice cream sodas. I still make sodas at home to this day!”

Submitted by Lauren A.

“My first job was at Braum’s, it started over two years ago on May 15, 2015, the day after I turned 16. It was in Chickasha, Oklahoma. It was the BEST first job ever. All my managers were amazing…

My best memory of working at Braum’s was probably when we got a 100% on one of the BOGO Tuesdays when another store challenged us. We were all so helpful of each other and I had a blast.”

  • 1 can Braum’s crescent rolls
  • 1 egg
  • Mustard for serving
  • Ketchup for serving
  • Pickle relish for serving

Directions

  1. Open the pack of crescent rolls and divide the dough along the outlined ridges. With a pizza cutter, cut the triangles into strips.
  2. Take one strip and wrap it around a hot dog. Leave a small exposed space on one end of the hot dog. Place onto a cooking spray-covered baking sheet. Repeat with the other hot dogs.
  3. Crack one egg and beat in a small bowl. Brush each mummy with beaten egg wash.
  4. Bake the hot dogs at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until the mummies become a golden brown. Allow to cool for several minutes. With a tooth pick, dot two eyes on the mummies using ketchup or mustard. Serve with additional mustard, ketchup, and relish.
