It’s what some may call, the best time of the year!

As summer winds down, you will want to get as much grilling in as you can!

The weather’s still hot, football season is kicking off and it’s a holiday weekend, so it’s the perfect time to put your master grilling skills to work. However, if you’re hesitating to fire up the grill because you don’t want to spend an hour dealing with a grocery run, Braum’s Fresh Market is about to make your day.

You were already going to make a stop at Braum’s to keep your freezer stocked with dessert for the holiday weekend, so save yourself a trip and pick up everything you need for a fresh-off-the-grill dining experience. It’s no secret that we source all of our dairy products from our dairy herd in Tuttle, Oklahoma, but we like to use local meats, produce, and baked goods to supply our Braum’s Fresh Markets as well.

You can get burgers for grilling, buns, cheese, and all the condiments you need for a proper cookout. We also offer fresh produce so you only need to make one stop if you’re looking for the L and T in your BLT. Are you more of a barbequed chicken person? We’ve got fresh poultry ready to get basted in sauce. Do you have a strong opinion about hot dogs being a sandwich? Pick up a pack of Schwab’s dogs and continue the debate while you’re grilling hot links by the pool.

Is there anywhere else you can do all your dinner and dessert shopping just feet from your parking space? Let somebody else wander the floor of the big-box supermarket. You’ll be able to pop in, stock up, and spend more of your time enjoying the outdoors. We don’t have propane or pool toys, but we’ve got everything else you could need for the time-honored ritual of mixing fire and food.

Stop in at your nearest Braum’s Fresh Market and see how much nicer your summer meals can be with a little assist from your favorite burger and ice cream spot. Be sure to check out our weekly deals, too!

Season chicken inside and out with salt, pepper, and herbs de Provence.
Squeeze half of the lemon on the outside of the chicken and stuff the remains of the lemon along with onion, garlic, rosemary sprigs inside the chicken. Transfer to a sheet pan, and tie the chicken by taking kitchen twine and plumping up the breast, then coming around with the string to lasso the legs and tie them together. Don’t forget to tuck the wing tips under themselves so they don’t burn.
Roast the chicken with the feet towards the back of the oven, until the juices run clear, and internal temperature is 160°F, about 50-60 minutes (Insert thermometer between the thickest part of the leg and the thigh).

Day 4:

Breakfast

  • Skinny Spinach Ricotta Quiche Cups

INGREDIENTS:
refrigerated Dough for 1 (9-inch) pie crust
7 large eggs, beaten
2 cups chopped fresh baby spinach (1 1/2 ounces)
2/3 cup skim milk
6 tablespoons grated parmesan
3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup part skim ricotta
1/3 cup part skim shredded mozzarella
3/4 cups halved grape or cherry tomatoes

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Roll the dough out on a well-floured work surface until it’s approximately 11 to 12-inches in diameter.
Transfer it to a 9-inch metal or glass pie dish. Using your fingers, press it firmly into the bottom and sides of the pie plate. Trim off any excess, leaving about 1/2-inch overhanging. Then fold/crimp the overhanging dough.
Prick the bottom of the pie crust with the tines of a fork. Transfer the pie crust to your pre-heated oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, until par-baked.
Meanwhile in a large mixing bowl combine eggs with spinach, milk, 2 tablespoons parmesan cheese, basil and salt; mix well.
Pour mixture into the par-baked pie crust.
In a small bowl combine ricotta with mozzarella and remaining parmesan.
Dollop the ricotta all around and top and place tomatoes around the cheese.
Place foil on the edges of the crust to prevent them from burning.
Place quiche on cookie sheet and bake on the middle oven rack for 50 to 55 minutes, or until top is browned and a knife inserted in center comes out clean.
Let cool before serving.

Lunch: Chicken Club Lettuce Wrap

INGREDIENTS:
1 head iceberg lettuce, cored and outer leaves removed
1 tablespoon mayo (I love Sir Kensington) (check labels for W30)
3 ounces (about 6 slices) organic chicken or turkey breast
2 strips center cut bacon, cooked and cut in half (check labels for W30)
2 thin slices tomato
1 piece of parchment paper, about 14″ x 14″

DIRECTIONS:

Place the parchment paper down on your work surface.
Layer 6 to 7 large leaves of lettuce in the middle of parchment paper so that you create a lettuce base about 9 inches by 10 inches.
Spread the mayo in the center of the lettuce wrap.
Layer with the chicken or turkey, bacon and tomato.
Starting with the end closest to you, roll the lettuce wraps jelly roll style using the parchment as your base as tight as possible.
Halfway through rolling, tuck the ends of the wraps towards the middle.
Continue to roll the lettuce wrap, keeping it as tight as possible and using the parchment paper to guide you.
When it is completely wrapped, roll the remainder of the parchment around the lettuce tightly.
Using a serrated knife, cut the lettuce wrap almost completely, leaving a small piece of the parchment intact to help hold it together.

While the chicken is cooking, in a large work bowl mix the lettuce, tomato, cilantro, onions, olive oil, lime juice, salt and pepper. Set aside.

Let them rest 5 to 10 minutes before serving (meat temperature will rise 5 to 10 degrees after it is removed from the oven).

Day 7

Breakfast:

Greek Yogurt French Toast

4 slices bread

2 eggs

1/2 cup unsweetened Greek yogurt

1 tsp. cinnamon

couple drops of liquid vanilla stevia

1 tsp. Vanilla

1 tbs. butter

Combine eggs, yogurt, cinnamon, stevia and vanilla in a shallow dish. Stir well with a fork or whisk.

Place griddle over medium-low heat and add butter. Once the butter had melted, dunk bread in egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off.

Cook bread on skillet, flipping once to ensure each side gets golden brown. Serve with topping of choice (I went with a little pure maple syrup… an additional dollop of yogurt would be tasty as well!)

Braum’s Book Buddy Program Provides Sweet Rewards

$
0
0

It’s no secret formula that hard work yields delicious rewards, and those delicious rewards can, in turn, encourage more hard work. However, when we say “delicious rewards”, that’s not a figure of speech.

This year marks yet another year in the Braum’s Book Buddy Program, a program that rewards schoolchildren with treats from Braum’s when they finish reading six books. All the students need to do is have their teacher or parent/s monitor their reading progress using a chart and sticker book that’s provided by Braum’s. When they finish their sixth book, they can bring the signed book into Braum’s and redeem it for one of a variety of Braum’s ice cream dishes, or even a kids’ meal. The program is free of charge and open to any child in first to fifth grade that’s enrolled in a public, private, or home-school located within 30 miles of a Braum’s location.

Before the Book Buddy Program began, Braum’s was looking for a way to get involved and help the communities where they had a presence.

“We found that one of the greatest needs of our society was a greater literacy rate among children and adults,” explained Braum’s CEO Drew Braum. “We started working with educators and developed the Braum’s Book Buddy program. The success and growth of the program are amazing.” Today the program reaches over 1,300 public schools and more than 3700 home schools, with an estimated involvement of over 500,000 students.

Holly Wilson, a second-grade teacher at Fillmore Elementary in Oklahoma City, has seen first-hand how this program not only enhances the school’s existing curriculum but actually helps children develop a love of reading. She recalls one student who was initially only interested in the ice cream rewards, but soon found a passion for books. “He started reading more often and graduated to larger books, and then he was reaching for chapter books before I knew it,” she said. Each year Wilson sees students that come into her classroom not wanting to read, but at the end of the year, she has a classroom of avid readers. “It is a sweet and tangible thing that they can strive to obtain. By reading and having to take responsibility for what they have to do they are increasing their word and learning knowledge.”

If you’re interested in enrolling in the program or if you know a child or student group that might want to participate, be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s enrollment! Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year will open August 1st, 2020. It’s easy to enroll, and all the supplies you’ll need are provided by Braum’s. An Affair of the Heart: Then and Now

Here at Braum’s, the importance of supporting local craftsmen and small businesses is something that couldn’t be closer to our hearts. That’s why partnering with An Affair of the Heart for their 2019 calendar is such a natural fit.

We work with dairy as our preferred art form, but An Affair of the Heart brings together artists, craftsmen and small retailers who use their personal craft, skill and style to share the things they love with you. If you’ve lived in or near Oklahoma and you appreciate one-of-a-kind design, unique finds and supporting boutique businesses then chances are this is already an annual event for you. If you’re not familiar with An Affair of the Heart, then we recommend you clear your calendar and start putting together a shopping list!

In 1985, a group of eight women came together to put on a one-day shopping event. This inaugural outing of An Affair of the Heart was held in Oklahoma City and featured 60 different vendors that saw 800 guests by the time it was over. It got a little bigger each year, and in 1995 the one-day event became a multi-day operation that expanded to Tulsa.

Today, An Affair of the Heart is still run by the original partners, but now they are at the head of an operation that puts on six shows each year with a combined roster of about 1,500 different vendors. By the time the 2019 season is finished, over 50,000 visitors will have helped continue An Affair of the Heart’s goal of creating a unique shopping experience that has become an annual tradition for customers all over the Midwest.

We know you’re already planning your trip to An Affair of the Heart, and you’ve probably got a Braum’s run on your schedule for dinner or just to restock your ice cream supply, so we’ve got some very good news for you.

If you stop by any Braum’s Fresh Market location, we’ll have information about An Affair of the Heart so you can be sure to get it on your calendar. You can also redeem your Braum’s Fresh Market receipt for a free ticket* to an upcoming An Affair of the Heart show. Keeping it local has always been a winning formula for Braum’s and An Affair of the Heart is just one more way that we can show how much that means to us.

Visit a Braum’s Fresh Market location in the show areas for more information, or go online to AAOTH.com to get ready for the next big show.

*Receipts must be redeemed prior to the show. No receipts will be accepted at the show. Complete details available in stores or online at AAOTH.com.

Halloween Tips from Braum’s

Halloween is special among the holidays because it’s designed top-to-bottom for fun. You can be anything you want for a night, and if you’re lucky enough to look like you’re under 15, you even get to end up with a bag full of candy. If you’re an adult, then you can just turn off the porch lights early and eat the rest of the candy you were supposed to give out to trick-or-treaters. It’s basically one of the best times of the year.

Even with all the fun (and candy) to be had, a bit of planning is the key to having a safe and enjoyable Halloween. Here’s a few tips to make sure that your Halloween is free of un-planned scares.

High-visibility treat bags – No self-respecting ninja or jedi is going to want to add reflective tape to their costume, so make sure that their treat bag is bright and reflective so they’re easy to spot for motorists. It won’t ruin the look of their costume, and they certainly aren’t about to just leave their candy stash lying about, so they’ll always be easy to see.

Don’t forget dinner – Make sure they don’t leave the house with an empty stomach so they don’t eat all their candy in one evening. Getting them to sit down for a proper meal will be the easiest way to prevent a stomach-ache later on. We recommend our Slow Cooker Beef Ziti (https://www.braums.com/recipes/slow-cooker-beef-ziti/). It gives them plenty of carbs for trick-or-treating energy, and you can put it in the slow cooker in the morning so you’re able to help them get their costume ready instead of preparing dinner.

Candy isn’t always required – The days of being able to pass out home-made treats like popcorn balls or caramel apples are sadly gone, but there are still options if you want to give out something a bit different. Spider rings and vampire teeth can be fun and inexpensive additions to a treat bag. It’s also easy to find glowing necklaces, stickers, or erasers that can add a bit of fun to All Hallows Eve.

A short trip makes for a long night – The most common of Halloween injuries come from trip hazards like ill-fitting shoes and long costumes that are difficult to walk around in. If your favorite member of Gryffindor insists on wearing a robe, try to take a few inches off the bottom so it’s easier to navigate as they’re traveling through the neighborhood.

If you want to do something they’ll really love, you can purchase coupons for a Jr. Cone at Braum’s. You need to get your order in soon though, if you want to have them in hand for trick or treat events. You can contact the corporate office to purchase them: 405-478-1656. The coupons can be redeemed at any of our locations, and you’ll get bonus points with us if you can get them to stop by a Braum’s in costume!

Fun, Fall Recipes from Braum’s Fresh Market

We all have a bit of a laugh around this time of the year as just about every food offering takes on a Pumpkin Spice-flavored dimension. Everything from lattes to licorice gets a dash of ginger and cinnamon, but the real truth is that the Pumpkin Spice craze started because we all secretly want more fall-flavored treats.

Something about our palate seems to change when the leaves go from green to gold and the air starts to turn crisp, so let’s not make fun of it, let’s lean into it! Here are a few of our favorite recipes that you can have on hand to help say goodbye to summer and hello to sweaters.

Macaroon Sweet Potatoes with Apricot Preserves

You can get sweet potatoes in the store all year long, but they never seem more appropriate on the dinner table than in the autumn. Our first recipe is quick and easy, but it’s sure to add a new dimension to your table. Preserve-coated macaroons add just the perfect bit of sweet and crunch to your yams. Don’t limit this one to just the holidays!

Egg Nog Sweet Potato Casserole

Thanksgiving is coming, and everybody needs to have a solid sweet potato recipe. If this dish is a hit, then it’s a shoo-in for a repeat performance around Christmas. It combines the deep flavor of baked sweet potatoes with the creamy richness of egg nog. This recipe is all about the holidays, and we think it’s bound to become an annual favorite at your house.

White Chocolate Pumpkin Bombe

Did you think we’d do a blog post that didn’t include ice cream? Sometimes, your ice cream needs a bit more love than just being scooped into a bowl, and this recipe creates something pretty impressive. It takes a bit of prep work, but when it’s over you’ll have them ooh-ing and aah-ing and asking for seconds. This recipe uses our Butter Pecan and Pumpkin ice creams, but there’s no reason you can’t switch it up if there’s a combination that really gets your imagination going.

Holiday Ice Cream Sandwiches

The holidays just aren’t the holidays without cookies, and in classic Braum’s fashion, we’ve got fresh-baked cookies accented with plenty of Braum’s ice cream. The beauty of this recipe is that once you get a feel for making your own ice cream sandwiches you can mix and match the ingredients to suit the holiday at hand. No matter which recipe you use, you can get everything you need at your nearest Braum’s store. This one works year-round!

Stop by any Braum’s Fresh Market location and stock up on all the things you need to set a festive table! Our seasonal flavors are in stock and we’ll be sure to have plenty to get you through the holidays.

Epic Friendsgiving Recipes That Will Make You Extra Grateful for Braum’s

Most people aren’t too picky about the menu for St. Patrick’s Day or 4th of July, but when the end of the year rolls around, everyone’s got a dish or two that they’re really looking forward to seeing on the menu. The beauty of Friendsgiving is its informal, free-form attitude toward the holidays that embraces the thankful vibes of Thanksgiving without shackling you to a schedule or format that can make the holiday into a chore to be performed instead of a moment to be enjoyed.

Now that you’re not bound to the classic menu, let’s try a few new dishes that manage to push some boundaries while still recognizing old-school holiday flavors. These have been winners for us because they manage to keep up the traditional flavors and ingredients that you expect to see on a holiday table, but each recipe takes a bit of left turn that makes them fresh interpretations on classic ideas.

Let’s start where any good holiday should start, with breakfast. When people start to wander around the kitchen in their jammies, treat them to a stack of Egg Nog Pancakes. This simple recipe just swaps out regular milk for Braum’s Egg Nog, and the results will make you wonder why you don’t cook with egg nog all year long. If your flavors trend towards the more savory or spicy end of the breakfast spectrum, our Kickin’ Breakfast Bagels combines the zip of jalapenos, the crunch of bacon, and the creamy texture of cream cheese for a full-bodied breakfast with southwest charm.

Around the holidays, lunch is always sort of a come-and-go affair where we just snack on leftovers or maybe just have another slice of pie. Even with this carefree attitude toward your noonday meal, you’re going to get hungry around dinnertime, and that’s when it’s time to get serious. For an entrée that will make people gather around the table, Air Fryer Pork Chops have to be tasted to be believed. If you’re not cooking with an air fryer then you’re still cooking back in the 20th century. This easy-to-use appliance gives you the taste and texture of fried foods, but it uses air instead of oil. This recipe is surprisingly simple, but it delivers a center-plate dish that will make your guests think you spent hours in the kitchen.

For the perfect side dish, our Stuffed Sweet Potatoes tick all the boxes. Stuffed with all the best flavors of the holidays, these delicious side dishes could easily be the main entrée all by themselves. If you don’t feel like having them for one of the prime holiday meals, they’re also a great way to incorporate your holiday leftovers. However you enjoy them, just make sure to prepare a few extra, because they always seem to go faster than you think.

A holiday without something sweet is barely even a holiday at all, but you remember who you’re talking to, right? At Braum’s, we have a healthy appreciation for all things dessert, but when you’re ready to take your last course to the next level, you can’t go wrong with our Mini Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cheesecakes. The preparation for these little guys is pretty simple, but the cooking and freezing process takes a bit of time, so make sure that you get started early. Each one of these bites has cookies, ice cream, pumpkin bread, and just about everything that you’d want from a holiday dessert. You can also get all the necessary ingredients at any Braum’s FRESH Market, so you won’t need to make a bunch of stops.

The holidays are upon us, but just remember that it’s time to enjoy the company of friends and family, so don’t get bogged down in obligation. On your way to or from your next holiday party, stop by a Braum’s location and let us help you stock up for your next party or get ready for a quiet evening watching old Christmas specials on the couch.
